DESCRIPTION

An original printed envelope, being No 10 in a series of 10, with a Christmas design by Richard (dickie) Doyle (aged 15, did a lot for Dickens/Punch etc) – issued in 1840 parodying and caricaturing the government issued Mulready envelope, which came out on the 6th May 1840, the same day as the 1d Black, the world’s first stamp. There were no illustrated envelopes bar a few European private pastoral envelopes prior to this date. The Mulready design sparked ridicule by the Victorian public and the great artist of the time lampooned it, Rowland Hill realised his mistake and by 1841 had replaced it, and so the caricatures ended. Doyle’s Christmas design is the first Christmas design EVER to go through the post. There are two used examples, and maybe 40 unused of which ten are hand coloured. This is one of the unused originals.
